Green spaces and biodiversity

The preservation and development of green spaces within the urban environment contributes to a large extent to the quality of life of its citizens.  Besides their ecological role, urban green spaces fulfil other important roles, notably recreational, social, landscape, or even urban. These spaces are subject to numerous pressures and do not always benefit from adequate protection or management. Another important objective then is to maintain and encourage biodiversity in the city, not just out of a concern for protecting associated habitats and species, but also with the aim of bringing citizens closer to nature, and making them aware of environmental issues. To this end, flora, fauna and natural habitats benefit from monitoring and follow-up programmes, making it possible to obtain data which are essential for developing management policies and measures for biodiversity.
